The verdict

Go. It is free, open daily, and mid-October is peak season for the maple slopes. Do it in the late afternoon so you get daylight on the colours and the skyline at dusk. Expect crowds at the belvedere itself; the quieter payoff is walking the wooded paths on the way up.
